Farming and eating
Seeds, soil, water, and what wheat is finally for.
Wheat exists so that bread exists. Before bread there was a loop with nothing in the middle: you could grow wheat, harvest it, and turn it back into seed.
You will need
- Seeds — wheat, flax and cotton all come from their grown plant, 1 plant to 2 seeds, by hand
- Exposed soil, and light
- A Harvesting Sickle is worth making
Steps
- Find or make exposed dirt. Grass spreads onto it; crops want it bare.
- Sow the seed.
- Wait. Plants grow where they have soil, light and water.
- Cut it with a sickle. The sickle cuts only what grew, so it clears a field without eating the floor under it.
- Make Bread — it restores 30 health.
When it works
You have a field you can come back to and a stack of bread. All consumable healing shares one cooldown, so bread is a between-fights food rather than a mid-fight one.
When it does not
One seed behaves differently from all the others, and it is worth knowing which way round.
Almost every seed is a material: oak, birch, wheat, flax, cotton and flower. You place or scatter them, they fall, and they germinate where they settle on soil with air above. Aim at the ground.
Grass Seed is the exception. It is an item of a different kind that converts a cell rather than becoming one, so you have to aim at the strip of empty air directly above soil, not at the soil itself. Aiming it at the ground does nothing at all, silently.
If sowing grass feels like it "does not place right", that is why, and it is the verb rather than anything you are doing wrong.
Nothing grows. Check all three of soil, light and water. A crop in a dark cellar will sit there.
Your field burned. Every crop on this page is flammable and most of them catch below 100 °C — cotton at 60 °C is the lowest ignition point in the game. Do not farm next to your furnace.
You mined the crop instead of cutting it and got nothing useful. Use the sickle.
You want the seed back out of a plant. Most plants render back to two seeds by hand — see the Hand recipes.
